Choosing Where to Give Birth

You’ve recently found out you are expecting, how exciting! And nerve-wracking, especially if it is your first baby. An important step in this journey is thinking about where you want to give birth. Hospitals, stand alone birth centers, and in your home are all options. Here is a quick guide to help you think through these options.

Hospitals

  • Great option for high risk pregnancies

  • A lot of hospitals have an OB (Obstetrician) team and a Midwifery team to choose from

  • Access to pain management options (nitrous oxide, fentanyl, epidural)

  • Option for constant fetal monitoring

  • Usually have a tub or shower to use during labor

  • Quick access to Operating Room in the case of emergency

  • Sterile environment

  • Hospital protocols- IV port, intake upon arriving, stay for 24 hours after birth etc.

  • Birth doula and other family members can be present/other children may or may not be be able to be present- depends on hospital

  • Insurance can usually cover cost- but if not, expensive choice

Birth Centers

  • More “cozy and homey”

  • Midwifery care

  • Partnered with a local hospital in case of transfer

  • Big bed for golden hour

  • Tub access

  • Discharged within hours

  • More in depth prenatal appointments

  • Family and other children allowed to attend birth

  • Some insurances cover

Home Birth

  • Working with independent midwife/midwives- more in depth appointments

  • In your own space- comfortable and relaxed environment

  • Anyone you want can be present, or as little people as possible

  • Access to food/drink/movement

  • Golden hour in your bed

  • No driving

  • Out of pocket cost
